Tennis Ball Madness
Here's another tennis ball activity that my 5th-8th graders love! I believe it was in the book
"Silver Bullets."
Equipment
Box of tennis balls - lots of them!
Basketball court with one backboard down
Enought blindfolds for half the class (I use the typical halloween masks
with tape placed over the eye holes.)
Place the box of tennis balls on the center line. On your signal, students will get a tennis
ball and try to hit the backboard from the center line. This is great fun for the kids, who
seem to love throwing balls as hard as they can! Let them throw until they start running
out of balls, or set a time limit. Now, have your students try to hit the backboard while
throwing with their non-preferred arm. This is alot of fun to watch and the kids get a kick
out of it, too. When time is up, have the student pick a partner. One partner will be
blindfolded, and the sighted partner will help direct the non-sighted partner in thowing the
ball at the backboard. When time is up, have the students switch. This activity is alot
of fun, and also is a good cooperative activity. It helps reinforce the throwing motion, and
the kids also get a great aerobic workout not only from thowing, but also retrieving
rebounding balls.
